#Durianium—Planting the future, one vine at a time

Today at Yarik, Naya, and Eva’s grandma’s orchard, we worked on planting grapevines. Papa took the lead, digging holes in the soil to create space for the young grape plants to grow. Once the holes were ready, we sprinkled vermicompost inside to enrich the soil with essential nutrients.

Since grapevines are highly sensitive to fungal infections, we also applied fungicide to the holes before planting. This preventive step ensures the roots are protected from harmful fungi, giving the plants a strong and healthy start.

Yarik eagerly helped by carrying the young grapevines in their planter bags. One by one, we carefully removed the plants from their bags and placed them into the prepared holes. With each vine planted, we took another step toward creating a thriving vineyard in the orchard.

#Durianium—Letting the light in

At Yarik, Naya, and Eva’s grandma’s orchard, today’s work was all about garden maintenance. Yarik took on the task of pruning the branches of the Annona tree—locally known as Srikaya. The tree had grown thick and lush, but its dense canopy was blocking sunlight from reaching the surrounding fruit trees.

Once the excess branches were trimmed, more sunlight filtered through, giving the other trees a better chance to grow and thrive. Our hope is that with more sunlight, these fruit trees will develop even more beautifully and produce a bountiful harvest.

#Durianium—Clearing the old to plant the new

At Yarik, Naya, and Eva’s grandma’s orchard, today’s task was to remove the remnants of old trees and their deep roots. These trees had been cut down to make space for new grapevines, but their roots remained firmly embedded in the soil.

To fully clear the area, we had to dig deep—if any part of the roots was left behind, the trees might sprout again. Papa took a crowbar to break apart and uproot the stubborn roots. It was no easy task, but it had to be done. Only by clearing the land properly could we ensure the grapevines would have the best conditions to thrive.

#Durianium—Feeding the future: The power of vermicompost

Yesterday, with the help of a wheelbarrow, we distributed sacks of vermicompost to each durian tree. Unlike fresh manure, vermicompost can be applied directly to the trees without any fermentation process. However, for manure made from goat and cow waste, fermentation is necessary before use.

Durian trees are highly sensitive, and applying raw manure can cause "burning," often indicated by yellowing leaves. That’s why, in our previous video, we used EM4 as a fermentation agent to break down the manure before application. While waiting for that process to complete, today was the perfect time to spread the vermicompost.

Using a sturdy metal scoop, we carefully applied the compost to each tree. The recommended dosage is:

1. 2–3 kg for 1-year-old trees

2. 3–5 kg for 2-year-old trees

3. 5–7 kg for 3-year-old trees

However, since our land was newly cultivated and not yet fertile, and this was our first durian planting, we decided to be generous. We used one sack for small trees, two sacks for medium-sized ones, and three sacks for large trees.

After a full day’s work, we managed to fertilize only 15 durian trees on Terrace 1, about half of the trees in that section. However, there are still Terrace 2 and Terrace 3—each with even more durian trees—along with additional trees on the southern slopes and the downhill area. The sheer number of trees creates an enormous demand for fertilizer.

It’s no surprise that we’ve had truckloads of fertilizer delivered, yet it always seems like we need more. Growing durian isn’t cheap—but as in any business, quality comes at a price. And when the harvest comes, all the effort will be worth it.

#Durianium—Turning goat manure into gold for our orchard

After purchasing sacks of goat manure, today was the day to put it to good use. Fresh manure cannot be applied directly to durian trees—it would burn them. Instead, it must go through a fermentation process first.

Papa began by emptying the manure onto a plastic sheet laid over the ground. There was a significant amount to handle, and with each sack weighing around 50 kg, we had to be extra careful while lifting, opening, and pouring the contents to avoid injury.

Once a sufficient amount of manure was spread, it was time to add the fermentation starter—EM4, an agricultural product that helps break down organic matter and enhance soil fertility. The process involved mixing a portion of EM4 into a bucket of water, ensuring it blended evenly before pouring it over the manure. This was then spread out evenly before repeating the same steps with the next batch.

The fermentation process now begins. Over the next few weeks, the manure will transform into a rich, organic fertilizer ready to nourish our durian trees. Depending on environmental conditions, this can take anywhere from one week to two months, but in our case, it should be ready in about 2–3 weeks.

Without hard work like this, a profitable durian harvest would be just a dream. But seeing our trees grow, knowing we are contributing to a sustainable ecosystem, and working in the fresh air—it’s all deeply rewarding.

This is the essence of a farmer’s life: patience, persistence, and the promise of a future harvest.

#Durianium—From sweat to sweet harvest: The Journey of young farmers

Today at our durian orchard, the work was endless—just another day in the life of young, aspiring farmers. After purchasing sacks of manure and 1.8 tons of vermicompost, it was time to distribute them across the land.

Papa took on the task of transporting the heavy sacks of vermicompost using a wheelbarrow. Each sack weighed around 50 kg, making it a challenge to lift manually. Every movement had to be careful and precise to prevent injury. The process took time, patience, and resilience.

As we worked, we encountered black scorpions in the soil near the fertilizer. Far from being a threat, their presence reassured us that our orchard was part of a healthy ecosystem, still rich with natural biodiversity.

While distributing the vermicompost, Papa also gathered stones from the soil. Removing them would help loosen the ground, making it more fertile for our durian trees and other plants. Our son, Yarik, eagerly joined in, helping transport and distribute the fertilizer.

We set aside one sack of vermicompost to bring home, where it would nourish the grapevine growing in front of our house.

To reward Yarik for his hard work, Papa turned the wheelbarrow into a fun ride, pushing him back and forth between the orchard and the parking area. Moments like these make the hard work worthwhile, turning exhaustion into shared joy.

From morning until late afternoon, we labored under the sun. Farming as beginners is no easy feat—it demands sweat, sacrifice, and relentless effort. But this is what it takes to build something from the ground up.

We remain hopeful that one day, all this hard work will bear fruit—literally. A bountiful durian harvest will not only bring prosperity but also immense joy to our family. And we believe that day is coming soon!
