After days of clearing our land manually, it was clear we needed a big boost to prepare our future durian orchard. The soil was still tangled with roots and debris, and with a steep 45-degree slope over 50 meters, tackling it all by hand would take months and be too costly. So, we rented a large John Deere excavator for three days. Watching it dig up deep roots, shift heavy earth, and level the land was mesmerizing. Villagers even came by to watch the powerful machine work its magic!
Mama Lena designed three terraces across the northern half of our land, with each terrace about two meters lower than the one above it. The excavator couldn’t reach the narrower, southern part of the land, which slopes down sharply into a ravine, so we’ll terrace that area manually in the future.
One important thing Mama Lena did was allocate a few meters on the western edge of our land for a village road, creating better access for everyone. With a new village emerging nearby, this small act of kindness has already improved traffic flow for residents and goods alike. It's amazing how a bit of planning—and the help of a mighty machine—can turn a steep slope into a promising orchard.
