#Durianium—Clearing the path to a fruitful harvest

At grandma’s orchard, where Yarik, Naya, and Eva often play, the grass and weeds had grown wild, threatening the neatness of the garden. Today, it was time to restore order. Papa took on the task of cutting and clearing the overgrown weeds using a newly purchased brush cutter.

Before starting, the brush cutter needed to be assembled and filled with fuel. We chose Pertamax gasoline, a trusted product from the state-owned energy company, Pertamina. Safety came first—Papa made sure to wear a face shield to protect himself from flying debris during the cutting process.

With everything ready, Papa began trimming and cleaning the orchard. The brush cutter roared to life, and in no time, the weeds and grass that once blanketed the orchard were gone, leaving a clean, organized space. The freshly cleared garden now makes it easier to care for the durian and other fruit trees, bringing us one step closer to a bountiful harvest.

Hard work truly is its own reward, and any fruit that comes from it will just be the bonus. Let’s keep working towards that fruitful future!

#Durianium—Boosting growth with nature’s best fertilizer

After purchasing sacks of manure earlier, today we made another big step for our durian garden: buying 1.6 tons of vermicompost, a nutrient-rich fertilizer made from worm castings. To our surprise, the seller generously gave us a bonus of 200 kilograms, bringing the total to 1.8 tons of vermicompost, neatly packed and delivered in a single pickup truck.

Vermicompost is known to work wonders in enriching the soil, improving its structure, and providing vital nutrients for plant growth. Our plan is to mix this incredible fertilizer with the manure we previously acquired, creating a powerful blend to support our durian trees’ health and development.

This mix is more than just soil enrichment; it’s an investment in the future of our garden. By nourishing the soil with the best possible nutrients, we aim to help our durian trees thrive and, hopefully, produce their best fruits in the near future. As we spread the compost today, we couldn’t help but feel excited imagining the day when our garden will be brimming with golden durians ready for harvest.

Here’s to fertile soil, healthy growth, and the sweet rewards of patience and hard work!

#Durianium—Nurturing the soil, growing the dream

Today marked an important step in caring for our durian trees: spreading burnt husk (sekam bakar) around each sapling in our durian orchard. The husk, delivered in sturdy sacks from a trusted acquaintance, was easy to transport to the orchard using a wheelbarrow.

Once we reached each tree, we opened the sacks, carefully scooping out the contents with a small shovel and spreading the husk evenly around the base of the trees. Burnt husk is a fantastic soil conditioner, helping to loosen the soil while enriching it with nutrients. This step will support the durian trees in growing strong, healthy, and fruitful in the future.

As we worked, we encountered a small reminder that we were not alone in this ecosystem: a black scorpion emerged near the pile of sacks. It’s not uncommon to come across scorpions, snakes, or other small creatures in the orchard—they’re part of the natural balance. We handled the situation calmly, continuing our work with a sense of respect for the environment.

Gardening isn’t just about nurturing plants; it’s about embracing the entire ecosystem, coexisting with its inhabitants, and finding joy in the process. The sight of our saplings surrounded by enriched soil filled us with hope and excitement for the fruitful days ahead.

#Durianium—From obstacles to joy: A tale of perseverance & gratitude

The day we received a large package containing high-quality D24 durian saplings, also known as Durian Sultan, was filled with excitement. Yarik & Naya eagerly helped us unpack the precious plants, and soon, we were ready to transport them to our mountain garden, located 7 kilometers west of home at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters above sea level.

However, the journey wasn’t as smooth as we had hoped. Our usual paved road was under repair, forcing us to take a narrow and steep dirt path with loose rocks, gravel, and sand. Halfway up, the incline became too much for our car, and the wheels spun helplessly in place. Realizing it was unsafe to push forward, we stopped and tried everything we could to free the car—but to no avail.

Just when the situation seemed dire, two kind villagers on a motorbike came by. After we explained our predicament, they offered to help, calling a friend to bring a pulley and steel cable. With teamwork and resourcefulness, they secured the cable to a sturdy tree and used the pulley to gradually maneuver our car to firmer ground.

While we waited, Naya enjoyed playing with the village children, and we turned the unexpected delay into an impromptu picnic. Sharing our packed food with the locals and soaking in the serene village atmosphere turned a stressful event into a heartwarming experience.

After the car was freed, we expressed our gratitude with heartfelt thanks and a small token of appreciation for the villagers’ effort. This adventure reminded us that even in challenging moments, happiness is always within reach if we remain open to it.

#Durianium—From growth to grapes: The art of pruning

Beyond planting various durian trees and other fruit-bearing plants in our garden and Grandma’s orchard, we decided to experiment with cultivating Jupiter grapes at home. To encourage the plant to produce fruit faster, we employed a technique called *pruning for fruiting*. This method transitions the grapevine from its growth phase to its fruiting phase, ensuring it focuses energy on producing flowers and, eventually, delicious grapes.

The pruned branches and leaves didn’t go to waste; they were propagated using the grafting method, allowing for more grapevines to flourish.

We’re fortunate to have a grape cultivation community in our area. Today, Mas (Bro) Wahyu, a fellow enthusiast, visited our home to join in the joy of harvesting our first Jupiter grapes. He even took some of the pruned branches to start his own Jupiter grape cultivation.

The results were beyond our expectations. With proper pruning, our Jupiter grapevine began flowering within just six months. A few months later, it bore an abundant harvest of sweet, juicy grapes.

This experience has shown us that with the right care and techniques, growing something as delightful as grapes is both rewarding and achievable, even for beginners. The journey from a sapling to a bountiful harvest is worth every moment.

#Durianium—Turning tiny spaces into sweet success

Besides cultivating various types of durian and fruit trees in our family’s orchard and Grandma’s garden, we decided to experiment with growing Jupiter grapes at home. Using a super-mini plot of just 0.25 square meters in front of our house, we took a chance on this remarkable grape variety. Known for its low-maintenance nature and resistance to pests, Jupiter grapes seemed like the perfect choice.

We prepared the soil with care, enriched it with vermicompost to ensure it was loose and fertile, and added a dose of Vitamin B-1 to promote healthy growth. At the time of planting, the young Jupiter grapevine was only 1.5 meters long, about three months old.

Amazingly, within just six months, the vine rewarded us with an abundance of flowers. Shortly afterward, in the following months, it provided a bountiful harvest—about 20 clusters of grapes, each weighing around 300 grams. Sweet, juicy, and utterly delightful, these grapes proved that even the smallest patch of land could produce something extraordinary.

Our hearts were filled with joy as we marveled at the fruits of our labor—literally! This tiny space brought us not just grapes but also a lesson in resourcefulness and gratitude.

So, who’s ready to follow in our footsteps and turn every spare corner of land into something fruitful and beautiful?

#Durianium—Integrated farming, sustainable living

Today, we visited Bro Amin’s grape nursery and sales center in Kawedanan, Magetan. Our mission? To bring home some grape saplings to plant and cultivate on our own land.

Bro Amin’s place is a shining example of integrated farming, combining grape cultivation with freshwater fish farming and vegetable growing. Every nutrient is utilized efficiently: soil nutrients nourish the grape plants and various vegetables, while the leftover nutrients from plants are repurposed to support freshwater fish farming.

During our visit, Bro Amin generously offered us a taste of his Basanti grapes. Sweet, juicy, and absolutely delightful, they truly showcased the fruits of his labor—both literally and figuratively.

This trip was not only about purchasing grape saplings but also a learning experience. Seeing the success of his integrated farming firsthand inspired us to adopt and adapt his methods. With a few tweaks to suit our own land and conditions, we hope to replicate his success.

We left with joy in our hearts, grape saplings in our hands, and a renewed appreciation for sustainable agriculture. Have you ever visited a farm that inspired you to try growing your own food? Let us know!
