#Durianium—Growing oranges, grapes, and dreams—2

In addition to the durian trees we planted at Grandma’s house, Yarik, Naya, and Eva’s family decided to add a splash of variety with orange trees and grapevines. Today marked the start of this new journey as Papa picked up his tools and dug five holes in the garden.

With the holes ready, Papa carefully enriched each one with fertile soil mixed with worm-casting fertilizer. This preparation was crucial to give the new plants the best chance to grow strong and healthy.

Our hopes are high. We dream of harvesting the sweetest oranges and juiciest grapes, just as we anticipate the day when our durian trees bear their first fruits. Each step, from digging to planting, reflects the patience and care needed to nurture not just plants, but aspirations too.

For now, we wait with optimism, knowing that the seeds of effort we plant today will blossom into a fruitful tomorrow. 🌱

#Durianium—The art of collaboration for quality saplings

To find high-quality durian and other fruit saplings, Naya and her family embarked on a journey to Ngronggot, Nganjuk, East Java. Much like in Salaman, Magelang, the people of Ngronggot have mastered the art of collaborating to cultivate and market a wide variety of fruit tree saplings.

In both places, all it takes is contacting a local farmer. With their exceptional teamwork, they guide you through the process—from sharing detailed information to ensuring the saplings are safely delivered to your home.

The system works seamlessly: landowners focus on nurturing quality saplings, landless locals assist in the nursery process, and marketers ensure these premium saplings reach buyers far and wide. The result? Buyers are satisfied with top-tier saplings, while producers and marketers enjoy significant profits.

No wonder the standard of living in these areas is higher than in other regions. The secret lies in their trust-based collaboration—working together for mutual success, honoring commitments, and avoiding envy or conflict. Instead, they uplift one another to thrive collectively.

As we explored the nurseries, little Naya, immersed in the vibrant atmosphere, began singing a line from the popular children’s song "Balonku" (My Balloon)—“Ada lima... dor!” (There are five (balloons) ... bang!). It was a lighthearted moment amidst our lessons in the art of ethical and effective business.

#Durianium—Turning barren land into a sweet paradise

At Grandma's house, where Yarik, Naya, and Eva spend some of their time, a variety of fig trees have transformed an unproductive plot of land into a fertile paradise. From Red Israel and Green Jordan to Tiger, Iraqi, Brown Turkiye, Blue Giant, etc., every fig tree we planted flourished.

The best part? Growing figs turned out to be incredibly simple! Without much effort or elaborate care, these trees grew lush and healthy, yielding sweet, delicious fruits.

Our joy is immeasurable—what was once barren ground is now teeming with life, offering an endless supply of figs. It’s a delight to enjoy fresh fruit anytime while waiting for the long-anticipated durian harvest, which is still 3-5 years away. Truly, this experience has been a blessing and a reminder of nature's incredible resilience.

#Durianium—Intercropping brings sweet rewards

On both Yarik, Naya, and Eva’s grandma’s land and our own, we didn’t just plant durian trees. Among them, we also planted a variety of other fruit trees using the intercropping method. This approach helps maximize the value of the land while waiting for the main crop—the durian trees—to bear fruit.

Some of the fruit trees and plants we intercropped include mangoes, sugar apples, watermelons, melons, tomatoes, purple round eggplants, etc. To reduce evaporation and enrich the soil, we covered the plants with leftover leaves and Bokashi compost.

The Bokashi compost, made from weeds and plant residues, is fermented in sealed containers with the help of effective microorganisms (EM4). This organic fertilizer significantly improved the fertility of our soil, leading to better crop quality. The intercropped fruits grew sweeter, fresher, and more abundant.

What’s more, this system follows the principles of organic farming. Not only are the fruits healthier and tastier, but they also carry higher value. This journey has reaffirmed our belief in sustainable farming practices that are good for the earth and our bodies.

#Durianium—Melons of joy from Grandma’s garden

In addition to watermelons, we also tried planting melons on the land at Yarik, Naya, and Eva’s grandma’s house. This time, we planted them directly in the ground.

To our delight, many of the melon plants grew well and yielded sweet, delicious fruits. It’s incredibly satisfying to see how the available land can be turned into a productive space, providing us with fresh and nutritious produce.

Thanks to the melon harvest, we didn’t need to buy fruits from the market for several weeks. These homegrown melons not only met our vitamin and mineral needs but also brought immense joy to our gardening journey.

There’s something special about growing and enjoying the fruits of your own labor—it’s fulfilling, sustainable, and oh so sweet!

#Durianium—Sweet success with homegrown watermelons

At Yarik, Naya, and Eva’s grandma’s home, we decided to try planting watermelons. We experimented with growing them both in planter bags and directly in the ground. The results were encouraging! Most of the watermelon plants thrived, producing sweet and juicy fruits.

It brought us so much joy to make productive use of the available land, turning it into a source of something meaningful—in this case, a bountiful watermelon harvest. For several weeks, we didn’t need to buy fruit from outside to meet our daily vitamin and mineral needs.

The experience of gardening and enjoying the fruits of our own labor is truly rewarding. Nothing compares to the satisfaction of growing your own food, knowing it’s fresh, delicious, and the result of your hard work.

#Durianium—Harvesting rain, sustaining growth

Our land is located on a high plateau, far from rivers or natural irrigation channels. This means our durian trees and other fruit crops rely heavily on rainfall for water. Fortunately, a local water utility company has installed pipelines in the area, allowing us to connect a water supply for when rainfall isn’t enough.

To make the most of rainwater, we purchased several large plastic tanks and metal drums to collect and store it. These rainwater reserves have proven invaluable during dry periods, reducing our dependency on the water company and cutting costs. At Yarik, Naya, and Eva's grandmother’s home, we’ve done the same—setting up rain barrels to capture and store as much water as possible.

Plants, like us humans, need water and nutrients to survive, grow, and thrive. The difference is that while we can move around to find food and water, plants cannot. They depend on us to bring these essentials to them, especially when rainwater and other sources fall short.

With a little effort, we can ensure the land flourishes. After all, nurturing life—whether through plants or people—always feels rewarding.

#Durianium—Growing goodness, sharing happiness

While waiting for our durian trees to grow tall and strong enough to bear fruit, there’s plenty of space to grow other crops in between the young trees. Since the durians are still small, they won’t compete for sunlight or nutrients. So, we decided to try growing various plants that could be harvested and enjoyed in the meantime.

One of our choices was watermelon. We planted several varieties, taking care to fertilize the soil, provide vitamins, and spray for pests when necessary. To our delight, the conditions were perfect for watermelons! They grew beautifully, and the harvest didn’t disappoint—hundreds of kilograms of fresh, sweet watermelons!

Mama suggested donating part of the harvest to a nearby orphanage. Her idea was simple yet meaningful: let the children enjoy the benefits of fresh fruit, rich in vitamins and minerals, to help them grow healthy and happy. And, of course, we felt immense joy in sharing our blessings.

After all, isn’t true happiness found in giving? In brightening someone else’s day, right?
