#Durianium—Planting the durian trees

Once the land was ready for planting, we began digging holes for the durian trees, filling them with manure and sprinkling termite repellents to protect the roots. Ideally, durian trees should be spaced 8 to 10 meters apart. However, given our terraced land with steep slopes of up to 45 degrees forming deep ravines, the spacing had to be adjusted. Trees planted on different elevations could have flexible spacing, but on the same level, distances ranged from 4 to 8 meters to maximize the available space.

To ensure optimal water distribution, we installed a drip irrigation system. This required hundreds of meters of tubing, starting with large hoses from the main water source, branching into medium hoses, and then smaller ones connected to drip emitters at the tree roots. The system stretched over 2 kilometers and included connectors, hose cutters, and various tools, incurring significant costs.

We also purchased drums to collect rainwater during the rainy season, adding another layer of expense. Combined with the costs of high-quality durian seedlings, manure, fertilizers, pest repellents, spray tools, labor, and other essentials, the investment was almost equivalent to the cost of the land itself.

Growing quality durian requires not just financial capital but also patience, diligence, and unwavering effort. From nurturing young trees to the moment they bear fruit, the process demands consistent care and determination. As the saying goes, "No risk, no reward." If you’re not willing to take risks, you might as well stay in bed, rather than dream of becoming a durian tycoon building the durian imperium (Durianium), right?
