#Durianium—Planting the Hawaiian papayas

While waiting for our durian trees to bear fruit—a process that takes 7–8 years from seeds or 3–5 years from grafted saplings—we decided to plant something quicker and just as rewarding: Hawaiian papayas.

It all started with a single Hawaiian papaya purchased online. Though pricey, it was worth every penny. The fruit was incredibly sweet, with a sugar content of 13–16° Brix, firm flesh, and a delightful taste the whole family enjoyed.

After savoring this sweet treat, we thought, "Why not grow our own?" From the seeds of that one papaya, we planted dozens in small planter bags. With regular watering and care, they grew strong and healthy, ready for transplanting into the soil.

A few months later, the papaya trees rewarded us with their first harvest. The fruits were just as sweet as the original! We repeated the process, sowing seeds from each harvest and replanting them in planter bags. Over time, we cultivated hundreds of Hawaiian papaya trees, turning our small experiment into a flourishing orchard.

There’s nothing quite like enjoying the fruits of your own labor—literally! Growing our own papayas not only saved us money but also brought immense joy and fulfillment to our family. 💚
